Emotional baggage…we all have it.
It wears us out, but we continue to carry it every day. The body never forgets…and it always wins. It stores every emotion, every event, every time we criticized ourselves, every time someone else criticized us throughout our lives.
We are sick and tired of being sick and tired, but we resist any kind of change…even though we know it will help.
Let’s consider each emotion, event, insult, etc. that has occurred throughout your life as a small stone added to a backpack you carry every day. By the time you are an adult, you’ve amassed a very heavy backpack, bearing the emotional weight of your life.
You yearn to free yourself from your backpack full of emotions, but you are reluctant to do so, even though you know it’s taking its toll on you. The anxiety and stress caused by holding onto things that you need to let go is exhausting.
It’s making you sick and tired…too much of the time.
So why do we continue to carry this physically and mentally draining baggage?
We think we don’t have the time, it just takes too long
This may be true, if you think your only option is the typical western medicine protocol for treating anxiety and stress. It is common to be in therapy for years. You get some relief, but treatment typically involves some type of talk therapy coupled with a medication cocktail that seems to help at first, but doesn’t last.
We don’t want to become dependent on medication
I can’t blame you here. Who wants to put foreign chemicals in our bodies and deal with the accompanying side effects?
Unfortunately, this is the typical protocol when a person informs their doctor that their anxiety is interfering with their life. You get a script and are sent on your way.
Fear of what might be revealed about ourselves
Dear human, please know for sure that each and every one of us has a shadow side that we fear will be exposed. We think our stuff is terrible and are the only ones who have committed such heinous (in our minds) acts. So instead we lock ourselves up in a cage of self-imposed limitations of self-doubt, fear and trauma from an unhealed past.
This leaves us without desire, without enthusiasm for life.
We are left with a desperation that builds slowly and manifests in our psyche as rage and impatience and in our bodies as disease.
It’s your “identity”
Ever hear these words come out of your mouth? “It’s just who I am.” We believe certain things about ourselves for so long that they become our truth. We wear our stuff like a badge of honor. We have programmed ourselves with “I’m not good enough, smart enough, strong enough.” “I’m always stressed, that’s just me.” This is your ego’s lame attempt at trying to protect you.
Your core beliefs about yourself may be meant to keep others away…but they are not true.
You are magnificent…you just forgot.
To honor our family
All humans inherit family baggage. Along with the wonderful qualities come burdens that are carried from generation to generation. The prejudice, pain, guilt and shame are passed down throughout the family. We may feel that if we don’t suffer with the things our parents and grandparents suffered with that we are not honoring our family.
We must carry the torch or feel guilty.
Let’s consider that yes, we all came from some family…BUT we are also an individual spirit yearning to find our own way. We are torn between honoring our families and feeling like we will betray them if we pull away and create the life we really want.
I can’t afford it
Let’s get a little perspective here. Let’s say you live with anxiety and you are stressed much of the time. You catch every “cold” that’s going around and you can’t seem to shake it. From time to time you have to call out of work because of it. You are miserable and it’s impacting your life and the lives of your family, friends and co-workers. Or that you can’t afford years of therapy and the medications that come with it.
Guess what? This isn’t the only path to freedom.
It doesn’t have to take years to be free of your emotional baggage.
Fear of change. News flash! Change is constant.
We know this intellectually, but our fear of change is so strong we avoid it like the plague, even though we are so unhappy with our current situation. The past doesn’t change, so sometimes we live there, but this is not the life you are here to live. The primary reason we despise change is fear of the unknown. We want to know, well if I do this, what exactly will happen?
That’s an impossible stipulation to put on a dream, but is enough to keep us from initiating change. Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable is tricky…but it is the only way to growth and the life you want.
The good news…
Once you know that you must take responsibility for your own happiness, the universe opens up to you. When your desire to change is stronger than your desire to stay the same life’s magic begins. It reaches us through serendipity, what seem like coincidences (there is no such thing, by the way), and happy “accidents” that are ordained by the end result we want for our lives…our dream life.
This desire is often the byproduct of one of life’s difficult transitions such as the loss of a job, a divorce, a death, an illness, etc. Why?
Because life reaches us through chaos. The chaos gifts you with the wiggle room you need to transform your life. It’s okay. It’s not very comfortable, but this is the magic of life and the path to create the life you really want.
Leonard Cohen illustrates this beautifully in his song “Anthem…”
“Ring the bells that still ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”
Dear humans, we are meant to follow our bliss. To live in love not in fear. To heal ourselves so we may be of service to others. But how do we make peace with our past and create enthusiasm for our future?
