Being aware. Just what does that mean?
This is one of those things that falls into, it’s simple, but not easy. Awareness is a conscious effort that grows stronger with practice.
Day by day it becomes more of our natural state and the path to bliss.
So how do we become aware?
By paying attention. Yes it’s that simple.
So why don’t we do it?
Well we are just way too busy and our brains are so noisy we can’t even “hear” what our body is telling us. Luckily there is a way to ease into the practice of awareness.
The practice begins with getting tuned into our own bodies. Our bodies contain two different, cooperating systems that work in conjunction with each other. The health of our energy body/anatomy dictates the health of our physical body/anatomy.
We constantly get messages from our bodies in the form of discomfort, pain, tension, a nagging feeling that something just isn’t right as well as joy, happiness, things that make us smile, etc. It is our human nature to blow off the subtle messages sent from our body. Yup, we blow off the good along with the bad.
How many times have you ignored your intuition then said to yourself…I knew it, I knew this was a bad idea, something told me to turn, but I went straight instead…Then we declare we will listen to ourselves the next time. How often are we happy or joyful, but don’t note what gave us that feeling and therefore don’t seek out more things that make us smile and feel great. We just let life happen, be dictated to us, seemingly without our input.
What if we tuned into ourselves?
What if we listened to our intuition or that thing that made us go hmmmmmm, that’s not right. We could create an environment where healing could occur. What if we surrounded ourselves with things that made us smile and brought us joy…well that elusive happiness we seek could be alive and well with us every minute of the day.
Every sinking feeling, everything that makes you gasp, every nagging ache is your body trying to give you information that needs to be addressed. Every smile, warm and fuzzy feeling, things that make you burst out laughing, things that make you feel really good about yourself is your body letting you know what you enjoy.
Your mind and body are showing you your gifts…your purpose.
Let’s play out a general, but typical scenario many humans have experienced. One of my favorite quotes from Maya Angelou is…when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.
Perhaps you are dating someone you think you really like and can see a long term relationship in the future. The first dates go well, then one day they are very rude to you. After you show you are hurt, they apologize, say they had a bad day and you both blow it off. Then it happens again, this time with no apology and maybe a comment like…you are too sensitive.
We all see where this is going, except if you are the person in it and you really want this to happen you will ignore the sick feeling in your stomach and the hurt you feel when this person is rude to you again.
You begin accepting this behavior.
This can go a couple of ways, you stay with the person and become different, because you may think you can change them or that….you say to yourself…well it really isn’t THAT bad. Or…you become aware of how negative this person makes you feel about yourself, you are brave and send this person packing and save yourself from maybe months or years of making excuses for them and denying your own happiness.
Every signal your body sends to you, whether physically or emotionally (NOTE: emotion is energy in motion) is a message seeking attention. The messages begin in a very subtle manner. If the subtle signals are ignored they will get louder and louder until something dramatic happens that finally gets your attention enough that it cannot and will not be ignored…e.g. illness.
How is awareness achieved?
Practice, practice, practice. Practice presence.
Be where you are when you are. Meditation works. It is a wonderful way to quiet your mind so you are able to hear what your body tells you. Yes, this takes practice too. The key is to start, then keep going.
When we address the things our body asks us to, we can address them when they are still small things. The body will not be ignored. It will get as loud as it needs to get your attention.
Take a few minutes to think of times when you could have made your life much easier by listening to your intuition. Your body/intuition will never lie to you. Your brain, if it is controlled by your ego and is not present, will try to convince you otherwise.
Be present, accept and act on the messages you receive. Your life will be yours to create.
Our bodies are intelligent, alive and aware. Listen to it. You will be amazed at its wisdom.
