The mind communicates with the body via hormones. Therefore the effects of stress or relaxation don’t just effect the mind, they effect the body as well.
NOTE: The practice of meditation is critical for countering the effects of stress in your life and in your body.
Environment of stress: Immune response is depressed, cell repair mechanism is turned off because the body thinks it needs to get ready to flee or fight. If this is your predominant state of being, illness and disease may occur.
Environment of relaxation: Immune response is enhanced, cell repair mechanism is turned on, health improves.
Internal Environment of Stress
Did you know that humans are the only animals that punish ourselves and others thousands of times for the same mistake?
When we continually punish ourselves or have unresolved negative emotions and feelings along with the negative events swirling inside our heads, we send a message to our brains that we are in danger. The physiological response is the same whether it’s a thought or an actual emergency.
Your lizard brain signals danger/threat and initiates the stress response. The response is the same whether you are being demeaned by someone or rescuing someone from a fire. Your lizard brain cannot tell the difference between a thought reliving the event in your head or if it is actually happening in real time, so it responds the same way. It sends stress hormones cascading throughout your body.
If your body is in stress mode enough of the time the cell receptors which are part of every cell may begin capturing these stress hormones and incorporating them into your individual cells.
If this happens, when the cells divide the new cells with these stress hormones included, changes the biology of those cells. If this continues the body will try to balance itself, which may become an illness or disease in your body.
Emotions/feelings causing the stress response to trigger include, but are not limited to, fear:
- feeling unworthy
- negative thoughts
- self criticism or deprecation
- feeling inadequate
- victim mentality
- feeling like you have no control
- feeling useless
- knee-jerk pessimistic beliefs that kick in when something you perceive “goes wrong”
- comparing yourself to others
- refusing to forgive yourself or others
- judgment of yourself of others
This list goes on…
When feelings or emotions flood your body, creating chronic stimulation of the stress response, energy from the stress reaction goes to your body trying to maintain a healthy homeostasis (balance). The body can keep up at first, but over time the body gets tired and things start to go wrong. This leaves you susceptible to illness and disease.
Are you saying to yourself… no wonder why I’m tired all the time?
The early warning signs that this may be happening in your body include but are not limited to backaches, headaches, insomnia, fatigue, dizziness, change in your appetite (too much or too little), gastrointestinal distress, e.g. nausea heartburn, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
Internal Environment of Relaxation
Emotions and feelings causing a relaxation response are one of the primary causes of health.
When you embrace these emotions and feelings you create an environment in which the body can repair itself. One of the most important is self love. You must love yourself first to heal other aspects of your life.
The emotions/feelings/practices creating an internal environment of relaxation include but are not limited to…
- service to others
- playing with pets
- acceptance of what is
- positive thoughts
- positive energy
- a sense of humor
- strong relationships
- fulfilling sex life
- experiencing pleasure regularly
- express your version of creativity
- taking personal responsibility
- feeling useful
- taking action
- practicing forgiveness
- being your authentic self
- connection to the divine
- non-judgmental attitude
- laughter, etc.
A much more fulfilling list, wouldn’t you agree?!
When the cells of your body are bathed in the relaxation hormones triggered by the above emotions, feelings and practices your immune system will be enhanced and your cells will be living in a state of repair.
The early warning signs are more peace and balance in your life.
